Pillar 6 · Monday flagship
The Food Science Culinary Lab
Monday is the long lab day, capped by the Culinary Lab: the kitchen as a chemistry set, a math workbook, and a life-skills classroom all at once.
Food is the friendliest science
A typical Monday: Culinary Lab, Pizza Science. Why does yeast make dough rise? What does gluten do? How do you halve a recipe that calls for ¾ cup? Every question is chemistry, biology, or math wearing an apron.
Along the way children practice measuring, sequencing, kitchen safety, teamwork, patience, and cleanup: practical skills families notice at home the same week. Cooking is the curriculum; the lab is about learning, and tasting your own results is the reward.
A Monday in the lab
- The question: what makes dough rise?
- The science: yeast, gluten, and a rising-dough experiment
- The math: scaling the recipe for the group
- The build: hands in the dough
- Taste test + lab notes
Skills that leave the kitchen
Kitchen math
Fractions, ratios, doubling and halving: math with an immediate, delicious reason to get it right.
Following + adapting a process
Recipes are algorithms. Reading them, sequencing steps, and adjusting when something changes is real procedural thinking.
Practical independence
Measuring, safe tool handling, cleaning as you go: life skills practiced weekly, not lectured about.
Collaboration
A small group shares one kitchen: dividing roles, timing handoffs, and serving something you made together.
Life Skills + Culinary is the sixth area of the 6Lab Method, the one where science, math, creativity, and collaboration all show up at the same table.
